The Mithril Coat

Also known as: The Mithril Shirt, Bilbo's Mithril Coat, The Mithril-Mail

The mithril coat was a small shirt of rings forged of the silver-steel mithril, light as linen yet harder than dragon-mail, drawn by Bilbo from the hoard of Erebor and given to him by Thorin as a parting gift. Bilbo gave it in turn to Frodo at Rivendell. In the deeps of Moria it turned the thrust of an orc-chieftain's spear that should have pierced Frodo through; and at Cirith Ungol it was stripped from him by the orcs, and shown after by the Mouth of Sauron at the Black Gate as false proof that the Ring-bearer was taken. Gandalf reckoned its worth greater than the whole of the Shire and all that was in it.
