The Book of Mazarbul, the Book of Records, was the chronicle kept by Balin's ill-fated colony of Dwarves who sought to recolonize Moria. The Fellowship found it hacked, burned, and stained in the Chamber of Mazarbul beside Balin's tomb; its last broken entries -- the failing scrawl of we cannot get out, and they are coming -- told the doom of the colony, overwhelmed in the dark by Orcs. Gandalf bore it away, that it might be carried at the last to Dain at the Lonely Mountain as a grim record of the fate of Balin's folk.
