Belthronding was the great black bow of Beleg Cuthalion, the renowned archer of Doriath, made of yew and so prized by him that he suffered none other to draw it. With it and his sword Anglachel he hunted the servants of Morgoth and warded the marches of Thingol's realm; and when he was slain in the dark by Turin, whom he had come to rescue, the bow was buried with him, and the lament made for his death was named Laer Cu Beleg, the Song of the Great Bow.
