Mithril

Also known as: True-Silver, Truesilver, Moria-Silver

True-silver, the most precious metal in Middle-earth, found in quantity only in the deep lodes of Khazad-dûm beneath Caradhras. Light as a feather and hard as dragon-scales, it can be beaten like copper and polished like glass, and it never tarnishes. The Doors of Durin were traced in ithildin made from it; the Elves of Eregion loved it; and the Dwarves delved so deep in pursuit of it that they woke the Balrog. Bilbo's mithril-coat, a king's gift from Thorin, was worth more than the whole Shire — and on Frodo it turned the spear-thrust of the Moria cave-troll.
