The waybread of the Elves: thin golden cakes wrapped in mallorn leaves, one of which will fill a traveller for a day of long labor. Its making descends from Yavanna's gift of special corn in the Elder Days, and the secret is kept by queens — Galadriel gave it to the Fellowship at their parting. It strengthened Frodo and Sam across the deserts of Mordor where nothing else could have; it has a virtue beyond nourishment, feeding the will when flesh fails. Gollum could not bear to taste it.
