The great red leather-bound book in which Bilbo wrote his memoirs — There and Back Again — and Frodo, in his turn, the story of the War of the Ring, leaving the last pages for Sam. Kept by Sam's descendants in the Westmarch with Bilbo's Translations from the Elvish bound beside it, it is the source, in the conceit of the tale, of everything we know: The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are presented as its surviving copies.
