Men

Beor The Old

Also known as: Balan

The leader of the first Men ever to cross the Blue Mountains into Beleriand, and the first to swear service to an Elven king. Finrod Felagund, hunting in Ossiriand, came upon Beor's wandering people by night, took up a harp while they slept, and sang to them of the making of the world; they woke and listened, and named him Wisdom. Beor — whose name means Vassal — served Finrod the rest of his days, founding the First House of the Edain, the house of Beren, Morwen, Turin, and ultimately of Elros and Elendil. He died of old age at ninety-three: the first death of weariness the Eldar had ever witnessed, and a grief and wonder to them, for they saw that Men's brief lives were not a wound but a destiny.
