Finrod Felagund, eldest son of Finarfin, was the noblest and best-loved of the princes of the Noldor in exile, and alone among the leaders of his house had dwelt in the light of the Blessed Realm. With the wealth of Doriath and the craft of the Dwarves he delved the great underground fortress of Nargothrond, taking the name Felagund, "Hewer of Caves." He was the first of the Eldar to come upon Men, when he found the house of Beor newly come over the mountains, and ever after he was the truest friend of mortals, who named him Nom, "Wisdom," in their own tongue.
Years before, in the Dagor Bragollach, Finrod had been saved from death by Barahir, a lord of Men, and in gratitude he swore an oath of abiding friendship and aid to Barahir and all his kin, giving him his ring as a token. When Barahir's son Beren came to claim that oath for the quest of the Silmaril, Finrod gave up his crown and went with him, though his own people, swayed by the sons of Feanor, would not follow. Captured by Sauron, the two were cast into the pits of Tol-in-Gaurhoth, where Finrod strove against the Dark Lord in a duel of songs of power and was at last overmastered; and there he died, breaking his bonds with his bare hands to slay the werewolf that came to devour Beren, giving his life to keep faith with his oath. His spirit, cleansed, walks now with his father in the light of Aman.
