Rath Dinen, the Silent Street, was the hallowed way in Minas Tirith that ran from a door behind the Citadel into a closed place of tombs upon the shoulder of Mindolluin, where the Kings and Stewards of Gondor were laid to rest in great houses of the dead. Thither in his madness Denethor bore the wounded Faramir to burn them both upon a pyre in the House of the Stewards; and there Gandalf and Pippin came in haste and snatched Faramir from the fire, though Denethor perished in the flames.
