The young son of Beregond of the Guard, who remained in Minas Tirith during the siege when most of the children were sent away. Assigned to show Pippin the city, he became the hobbit's first friend in Gondor — a boy of ten who initially sized Pippin up for a wrestling match before learning, to his delight, that this small stranger was a soldier of the Tower Guard. Through Bergil's eyes the reader watches the war arrive: the outland companies marching in too few, the darkness spreading from Mordor, the fields burning. He survived the siege, and his father's banishment-turned-honor took the family to Ithilien in the service of Prince Faramir.
