The sixth king of Numenor and the greatest of its mariners, who founded the Guild of Venturers and made the long voyages that established Numenorean havens in Middle-earth. His restless love of the sea wrecked his marriage to Erendis in the most human tragedy Tolkien wrote of Numenor — she counted the years of his absences in the white tears of her jewels, and their estrangement echoed down the kingdom's politics for generations. His friendship with Gil-galad and his foresight that a shadow was stirring in Middle-earth laid the first foundations of the alliance that would one day overthrow Sauron — though by then, Numenor itself was gone.
