Pengolodh the Wise was the greatest of the loremasters of Gondolin, a sage of mingled Noldorin and Sindarin descent who survived the fall of the hidden city and dwelt afterward at the Mouths of Sirion, and in later ages in Lindon and upon Tol Eressea. To him the tradition ascribes the gathering and setting-down of much of the deep lore of the Elder Days -- the annals, the grammars, and the great tales -- so that through his long labour the knowledge of the First Age was preserved for those who came after.
