Ted Sandyman was the miller's son of Hobbiton, a surly and sneering hobbit who scoffed at tales of Elves and walking trees and at any talk of the world beyond the Shire. When Lotho and the ruffians took over, Ted threw in his lot with them, helping to pull down the old mill and raise an ugly new one that fouled the Water with its smoke and filth. After the Scouring he was left a broken and friendless figure amid the ruin of the works he had served.
