The heart-village of the Shire, set around the Hill and the Water with its old mill and the Party Field. Bag End sits at the top of it, and the Green Dragon at nearby Bywater serves its beer. Sharkey's men gutted it during the war — trees felled, the mill rebuilt ugly and fouling the stream — but Sam restored it, and the mallorn he planted in the Party Field became the wonder of the neighborhood, the only one of its kind east of the sea.
