The chief village of the Bree-land at the crossing of the Great East Road and the Greenway, remarkable as the one place where Men and Hobbits have always lived side by side. Its inn, The Prancing Pony, kept by Barliman Butterbur, is the news-heart of the whole region — and the place where Frodo's ill-judged song, a slipped Ring, and a grim-faced Ranger called Strider changed the course of the age.
A disreputable man of Bree who was an informer for the Nazgûl and later served Saruman's interests in the Shire. He sold the hobbits the pony Bill at an extortionate price. Bill the pony kicked him when the hobbits returned to Bree.
