A half-starved pony purchased from Bill Ferny in Bree. Sam cared for him devotedly, and Bill recovered to become a sturdy and loyal animal. He carried much of the Fellowship's gear from Rivendell to Moria, where he was reluctantly set free at the Doors of Durin. Bill found his way back to Bree on his own. Sam was joyfully reunited with him after the War of the Ring.
