Namo, called Mandos after the halls that he keeps, is the Doomsman of the Valar and the Judge of the Dead. In his vast halls in the west of Valinor he gathers the spirits of Elves slain in body, who there await their healing and rebirth; and thither too come the spirits of Men for a brief while ere they pass beyond the world to a fate that the Valar do not know. Mandos forgets nothing, and knows all that shall come to pass, save only that which lies hidden in the will of Ilúvatar alone; yet he speaks no prophecy unbidden, but only at the command of Manwë.
Stern and dispassionate, moved by neither fear nor pity, it was Mandos who stood upon the shore of Araman and spoke the Doom of the Noldor -- the Prophecy of the North -- foretelling the betrayal and unending sorrow that the Oath of Fëanor would bring upon his house. Yet once, and once only, his heart was touched: when Lúthien knelt before his seat and sang to him of the griefs of Elves and Men interwoven, pity awoke in him for the first time, and he granted to her and to Beren a fate without precedent. His spouse is Vairë the Weaver, whose tapestries, storied with all the deeds of Time, hang upon the walls of his ever-widening halls.
Spouse of Mandos, Vairë weaves all the events of Time into her storied tapestries that drape the halls of Mandos. Through her weaving, the entire history of Arda is recorded and preserved.
