Also known as: Barrow-Wight, Barrow-Wights
The Barrow-wights were evil spirits that haunted the ancient tombs of the Barrow-downs, sent there by the Witch-king of Angmar to defile the graves of the Dunedain and inhabit the bones of the dead. Cold and pitiless, they sang chill songs in the dark, and sought to slay the living and lay them in the mounds with rusted treasure and a naked blade across their throats. One such wight trapped Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin in a barrow, and they were saved only by the song and the sudden coming of Tom Bombadil, who broke the spell and drove the wight howling out into the day.
