Radagast the Brown was a Maia of Yavanna, sent to Middle-earth as one of the five Istari. His love for the animals and plants of Middle-earth led him to become absorbed in the natural world, and he largely neglected his mission to oppose Sauron. He dwelt at Rhosgobel on the borders of Mirkwood and was a master of shapes and hues, with great knowledge of herbs and beasts. Though he inadvertently aided Saruman's treachery by carrying Saruman's message that lured Gandalf to Orthanc, he also unwittingly aided Gandalf's escape by sending Gwaihir the eagle to Isengard. His ultimate fate is unknown.
