Two of the five Istari sent to Middle-earth, the Blue Wizards went into the East and their fate is uncertain. In some of Tolkien's writings, they are said to have failed in their mission, perhaps founding secret cults and magic traditions in the East. In later writings, Tolkien suggested they may have succeeded in weakening Sauron's influence in the eastern lands, preventing him from mustering even greater armies. Their names in Valinor were Alatar and Pallando, though Tolkien later renamed them Morinehtar ("Darkness-slayer") and Romestamo ("East-helper").
