Also known as: The Balrog Of Moria
A Balrog of Morgoth, one of the corrupted Maiar of fire who served the first Dark Lord. This Balrog fled after the War of Wrath and hid deep beneath the Misty Mountains. In the year 1980 of the Third Age, the Dwarves of Moria delved too deep in their search for mithril and awakened it. The Balrog slew King Durin VI and then Nain I, driving the Dwarves from Khazad-dum, which became known as Moria, the Black Pit. It lurked there for over a thousand years until the Fellowship passed through, and Gandalf confronted it upon the Bridge of Khazad-dum. The Balrog was finally slain by Gandalf atop Zirakzigil after a battle that lasted ten days, though Gandalf also perished in the struggle.
