A Maia of Ulmo, Ossë is the vassal of the Lord of Waters who governs the coastal seas and the islands. He delights in storms and is fierce and unpredictable. Morgoth once tried to seduce him to evil with promises of dominion over the sea, and Ossë was briefly drawn to his service before Uinen calmed him and he returned to his allegiance to Ulmo.
A Maia of Ulmo and spouse of Ossë, Uinen is the Lady of the Seas, whose hair lies spread through all the waters under the sky. Mariners call on her, for she can lay calm upon the waves and restrain the wildness of Ossë, and the Númenóreans held her in reverence equal to the Valar.
