Lord of the Eagles in the Third Age, Gwaihir is the greatest of the Eagles of his time. He rescued Gandalf from the pinnacle of Orthanc when Saruman imprisoned him, and later bore the resurrected Gandalf from the peak of Zirakzigil after his battle with the Balrog. Most crucially, Gwaihir and his brother Landroval rescued Frodo and Sam from the slopes of Mount Doom after the Ring's destruction. He also fought in the Battle of Five Armies and the Battle of the Black Gate. He owed Gandalf a debt for healing him of a poisoned wound.
