The great craftsman of the Valar, master of all substances of which Arda is made, and spouse of Yavanna. Aule delights in the act of making and in the properties of materials. In his eagerness for the awakening of the Children of Iluvatar, he created the Dwarves in secret, though Iluvatar granted them true life and free will. Aule's greatest pupil among the Maiar was Sauron, who was originally called Mairon, and who learned much of craft and making from his master before being corrupted by Morgoth. Aule also taught the Noldorin Elves much of their smithcraft, and Feanor studied under his guidance.
