In the films Tauriel is a Silvan Elf, captain of the guard of Thranduil's Woodland Realm, who defies her king to pursue the Orcs hunting Thorin's company. She saves the wounded Kíli in Lake-town, and the two grow close; in the Battle of the Five Armies she fights beside Legolas, and Kíli is killed by Bolg trying to save her. Her name is Sindarin in form, roughly 'daughter of the forest'.
