One of the twelve companions of Barahir who haunted Dorthonion as outlaws after the Battle of Sudden Flame — and the man whose breaking betrayed them all. Sauron's phantoms showed him a vision of his wife Eilinel, whom he believed dead, alive and grieving; captured and brought before Sauron himself, Gorlim bargained the location of Barahir's refuge for reunion with her. Sauron, smiling, kept the letter of the bargain: Eilinel was indeed dead, and Sauron sent Gorlim to join her. The camp was destroyed and Barahir slain; only Beren, away on an errand, survived — warned too late by Gorlim's repentant ghost, which came to him in a dream across the mere of Aeluin.
