Haldad was the chieftain of the Haladin, the second people of the Edain -- a stern and solitary folk who came into Beleriand and dwelt for a time in Thargelion. When Orcs fell upon his scattered people, Haldad gathered those he could behind a stockade in the angle of the rivers Ascar and Gelion and held out against the siege. In a sally to recover the body of his captured son Haldar he was slain; and his daughter Haleth took up the leadership and held the stockade until the siege was at last broken.
