Farmer Maggot

Farmer Maggot kept the farm of Bamfurlong in the Marish, in the east of the Shire.1

Frodo had feared him since boyhood, when he was caught stealing Maggot's mushrooms and chased off by his dogs, Grip, Fang and Wolf. But when Frodo, Sam and Pippin crossed his land in September 3018, fleeing the Black Riders, Maggot welcomed them. He told them that a Black Rider had already come to his door asking for Baggins, and that he had sent it about its business.1

He sat them down to supper with his wife and family, and would not let them walk on in the dark. Instead he drove them in his wagon through the gathering mist as far as the lane to the Bucklebury Ferry, where they met Merry on the road, and sent them off with a basket of mushrooms from Mrs Maggot.1

The hobbits learned later that Tom Bombadil knew him well, and seemed to think him a person of more importance than they had supposed.2
