Classical Sindarin vs. Neo-Sindarin
Classical Sindarin and Neo-Sindarin are not rival names for an identical word list. The distinction describes how closely a working vocabulary limits itself to Tolkien’s later Sindarin material and how it handles the many gaps left by the surviving corpus.
What “classical” means in Lamethir
The Sindarin target prioritizes forms identified with Tolkien’s Sindarin period and keeps its working vocabulary narrower. This makes provenance easier to inspect, but it does not turn Tolkien’s evolving notes into one finished, contradiction-free standard.
Tolkien revised roots, meanings, sound histories, and grammatical ideas. Even a classical composition may require an editorial decision between forms from different documents or dates.
What Neo-Sindarin adds
Neo-Sindarin is a practical approach to writing beyond the securely attested vocabulary. A Neo lexicon may select from Tolkien’s different periods, adapt material from earlier Noldorin or Gnomish stages, reconstruct a form using known sound changes, or include a post-Tolkien coinage.
Those strategies increase coverage, but they also introduce editorial judgment. Different writers can make different defensible choices, so Neo-Sindarin should not be presented as a single official completion of the language.

- Start with classical Sindarin and identify which essential words are actually available.

- Record which words are reconstructed or coined, especially for publication or permanent inscriptions.
- Do not mix classical and Neo forms invisibly and then label the whole result Tolkien-authored Sindarin.

Lamethir provides separate Sindarin and Neo-Sindarin selectors. Rule-derived grammar remains beta-marked in either target, because vocabulary provenance and confidence in an automatically inflected form are different questions.
