Can English Sentences Really Be Translated into Elvish?
Many English sentences can be expressed in Sindarin or Quenya, but not by replacing every English word with a dictionary entry in the same order. The longer and more modern the thought, the more linguistic choices the translation requires.
Translation is more than vocabulary lookup
Languages divide meaning differently. English articles, helper verbs, prepositions, pronouns, tense, and word order do not map one for one onto Sindarin or Quenya. A natural result may omit an English word, use an inflected ending, mutate a consonant, or reorder an entire noun phrase.
Idioms need particular care. Translating the individual words in an expression such as “break a leg” would preserve the imagery while losing the intended encouragement.
The surviving languages have real gaps
Tolkien supplied extensive histories, examples, and vocabulary, but not a complete modern dictionary for every concept. He also revised both languages throughout his life. A sentence about software, contemporary institutions, or specialized science may require paraphrase or Neo-Elvish vocabulary.
Even ordinary ideas can expose an unattested verb form or uncertain syntactic choice. An honest translation distinguishes secure material from reconstruction instead of hiding the gap.
