Lamethir is a free Tolkien-language translator. It has no accounts, sets no cookies, and uses no fingerprinting or advertising. It measures how the site is used with a cookieless analytics service that records actions taken — never the text you translate.
During ordinary translation, the text you type and everything derived from it stays in your browser. Dictionaries and grammar rules are downloaded as application files and looked up locally. Lamethir sends no input text, found or missed word lists, suggestions, lore searches, translations, excerpts, or hashes to a server. There are exactly two ways the text you translate can leave your device, both described below, and both require you to act deliberately. (The cookieless analytics described further down count actions, never the text itself.)
Shareable links are the first explicit exception. The Link button creates a URL whose q parameter contains the text being shared. Copying that URL is local, but opening it or sending it to someone can expose the text to the recipient, browser history, messaging service, and the site's hosting infrastructure. Do not use a shareable link for text you want to keep only on your device; use the plain Copy button instead.
Reporting a translation is the second, and it is the only feature that sends your text to us. Under a result there is a “Report this translation” link. Following it opens a separate report page and carries the result across inside your own browser — the text is held in sessionStorage, not in the address bar, so it does not enter your browser history or any referrer, and it is discarded as soon as the page reads it. Opening that page still sends nothing.
Only when you press Send report on that page is anything transmitted. What is sent is exactly what the page shows you: the text you typed, the language pair, the translation and its per-word details, your suggested correction, and any citation or email address you chose to add. It goes to the site owner through Netlify's form service, which stores the submission for us to read. Nothing else about you is attached, and no report is ever sent automatically, in the background, or as a side effect of translating. If you would rather not send the text you translated, simply do not use the form; closing the page transmits nothing.
Lamethir uses Umami, a cookieless analytics service, to count visits and see which features people actually use. It sets no cookies, builds no profile, does not fingerprint your device, and does not follow you to other websites — which is why you are not asked to dismiss a consent banner.
What is recorded: page views, and named actions — translating, swapping languages, opening the dictionary, grammar or secrets, copying or exporting a result, unlocking an easter egg, and starting, playing and finishing any of the mini-games. Each action carries only interface details: the language pair you selected, which feature or easter egg it was, an export format, a game level and how it ended, the weapon you had equipped, whether a hint was used, how much of the wall was left, counts of shots and purchases, and how many minutes a game has been played.
What is never recorded: the text you type. No input text, translation, found or missed word list, suggestion, lore search, excerpt, or hash is sent. This extends to the Tengwar game: it records that a level was played and how it went — and, where a word's effect fires for the first time, the name of that effect, such as “burn” — but never the Sindarin words you forged. The single exception is deliberate and narrow: if you tap one of the example phrases Lamethir itself suggests, the event notes which of our own suggestions you picked. Anything you write yourself stays on your device.
Our hosting provider, Netlify, supplies a coarse country code while serving the ordinary page request. Lamethir uses it once, in that response, to default the website and translator to Hindi in India and English elsewhere. It creates no region cookie or visitor identifier, calls no separate geolocation service, and does not expose or store your IP address or precise location in the app. If you choose a language yourself, that choice is stored only in your browser and takes priority.
Lamethir stores a small amount of data in your browser's local storage, purely so the app works well for you. None of it leaves your device:

Fonts and application assets are self-hosted. The only routine third-party request is the cookieless analytics described above; there is no advertising or profiling provider. The blog and guestbook offer an optional Cusdis comment widget; it makes no request until you click the load button. If you then post, the name and message you submit are sent to and stored by Cusdis so the comment feature can work. The translator itself never loads the widget.
