Lamethir is a lexicon-based translator for the languages of Tolkien's Middle-earth. It translates words and short phrases across 11 languages, drawing vocabulary from The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, the LotR appendices, Eldamo.org, and Ardalambion. Grammar and morphology are intentionally simplified — the focus is on vocabulary lookup and exploration.
Lamethir supports bidirectional translation between English and all 11 Middle-earth languages:
| Language | People | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sindarin | Grey Elves (Sindar) | Primary language of Middle-earth Elves; spoken by Legolas, Galadriel, Elrond |
| Quenya | High Elves (Noldor, Vanyar) | The "Latin" of Elvish — ancient, ceremonial; spoken in Valinor |
| Neo-Sindarin | Modern Tolkien community | Extended Sindarin drawing on scholarly reconstructions |
| Neo-Quenya | Modern Tolkien community | Extended Quenya with community reconstructions |
| Black Speech | Mordor / Sauron's servants | The language of the One Ring inscription and Mordor orcs |
| Khuzdul | Dwarves | Secret, seldom shared; includes the Battle Cry of Moria |
| Adûnaic | Men of Númenor | Ancestor of Westron; language of the Númenórean kings |
| Rohirric | Riders of Rohan | Based on Old English; language of Éowyn, Théoden, Éomer |
| Westron | Common tongue of Middle-earth | The "translated" language representing the Common Speech |
| Entish | Ents (Tree-herders) | Long, deliberate; Treebeard's tongue — very few documented words |
| Valarin | The Valar (divine beings) | Language of the gods; extremely rare, only fragments survive |
Enter text in the input box and press Translate (or Enter). Each word is looked up independently. Words that are found are highlighted in green; unrecognised words are shown with a ✗ and kept as-is.
When a word isn't in the dictionary, Lamethir checks an internal synonym map (e.g. "happy" → "joyful") and translates via the nearest synonym. These are marked with a ≈ indicator.
For unrecognised words, the translator suggests near-matches from the dictionary ranked by semantic relatedness (using Levenshtein distance and a concept-group system). Clicking a suggestion automatically re-translates with the replacement word.
Typing the name of a major Middle-earth character (e.g. Gandalf, Galadriel, Sauron) triggers a character card instead of a translation, showing the character's race, aliases, and a biographical summary.
The ⇄ swap button instantly reverses the From/To language pair and clears the input, ready for reverse translation.
Toggle Tengwar On to render the translated output in Tengwar script (the Elvish writing system), displayed using the Tengwar Annatar font in English Orthographic Mode. Vowel tehtar are placed on the following consonant.
Click Browse Dictionary to open the full vocabulary browser. Features include:
Click View Grammar & Lore to access language guides for:
Each guide covers: phonology, grammar rules, notable phrases, cultural context, and in-world lore about who speaks the language and where it appears in Tolkien's works.
All easter eggs are triggered by typing specific words into the translator input box. They activate regardless of which language is selected and most are cumulative — they stay active for the rest of your session.
Clicking the Doors of Durin image at any time toggles the inscription on/off. Once the Fellowship Hunt begins, clicking cycles through the nine companion riddles.
After typing mellon, the Doors reveal a series of nine poetic riddles — one for each member of the Fellowship of the Ring. Solve each riddle by typing the character's name into the translator. Each found member earns their icon in the footer and their riddle is marked found.
