How Sindarin Consonant Mutations Work
A Sindarin dictionary entry is not always the form that appears in a sentence. Articles, prepositions, compounds, and other grammatical surroundings can alter the first consonant of the following word.
Mutation is grammar expressed as sound change
Sindarin mutations grew from historical sound changes at word boundaries and became grammatical signals. The best-understood systems are soft mutation, nasal mutation, and mixed mutation. Other proposed mutation classes are less secure and occur less often.
Learning to reverse a mutation is as important as applying one. A reader encountering varad must be able to recognize barad, and a reverse translator must consider more than one possible original when different consonants collapse to the same mutated sound.

Soft, nasal, and mixed mutation
- Soft mutation is the most broadly grammaticalized and appears after the singular article and in several closely connected constructions.
- Nasal mutation comes from a preceding n and is especially visible after the plural article in and certain prepositions.
- Mixed mutation combines features of soft and nasal mutation after particular historical consonants or prepositional forms.
- The trigger and the underlying dictionary form must both be known; mutation is not a free stylistic spelling choice.
