How to Write English in Tengwar

English can be written with Tengwar without first being translated into Sindarin or Quenya. The language remains English; only the script changes.

Open English Tengwar mode

1. Decide whether you want translation or transcription

Transcription writes the sounds or spelling of English with Tengwar signs. Translation replaces the English words with words from another language. A line can therefore be English in Tengwar, Sindarin in Tengwar, or Quenya in Tengwar; those are different results.

For direct transcription in Lamethir, choose English as both the source and target. That pair is intentionally treated as Tengwar transcription mode rather than an ordinary no-op translation.

2. Understand the vowel marks

Many Tengwar modes use tehtar, small marks attached to a consonant sign, for vowels. In Lamethir’s English orthographic mode, the vowel mark normally sits on the following consonant. When no suitable consonant follows, the vowel uses a short or long carrier.

This placement is a property of the selected mode, not a universal Tengwar rule. Quenya Classical Mode reverses the usual direction and places a vowel tehta on the preceding consonant, while the Mode of Beleriand writes vowels as independent letters.

3. Let words, not isolated letters, drive the result

  • Common consonant pairs such as th, sh, ch, ng, and qu are processed as units where the mode supports them.
  • A nasal before a related stop can be represented by a bar rather than two separate tengwar.
  • Silent final e and several common gh patterns need contextual treatment.
  • Marked long vowels use a long carrier instead of being treated like an ordinary short vowel.
  • Tengwar numerals use a base-12 convention and are written in their traditional reversed digit order by Lamethir.

4. Export for the intended medium

A copied text rendering depends on a compatible Tengwar font. PNG is convenient for social posts and previews. SVG is preferable for scaling, cutting, or handing artwork to a designer because the exported paths no longer depend on a font. PDF is useful for print workflows.

For a tattoo or engraving, preserve the Roman-letter source, language, chosen mode, and pronunciation notes alongside the artwork. Those details make expert review much easier.
